U.N Security Council Urged To Act on Burma
                                                          2005-09-21
We members of Myanmar Industries Association, were much surprised to hear about
the allegation made by Former Czech President H.E. Vaclav Havel and retired South African
archbishop , peace-loving Nobel-prize Lauriat, Hon. Desmond Tutu calling for the United
Nations Security Council to step in and demand democratic change in military-ruled Burma
(now Myanmar) citing a steady worsening of conditions. This call for actions was heard in the
Radio free Asia broadcast in English on 29th September 2005.
All the allegations made by them are not true. In fact, despite the hostile attitudes of
some of the countries led by the U.S. Myanmar's economy is developing at a fast pace. In
the industrial sector, Myanmar' Industries are not only growing in number but also producing
more and more varieties of produce of high quality. Today there are more than 80,000
private industries giving employment to workers in millions. The industrials sector had shown
23.5 percent growth in the year 2004-2005. The government is actively developing
hydropower resources and other energy resources including oil and gas in order to
encourage the development of industries. The government recent assistance to three
industrial zones to establish large scale iron and steel foundry projects is concrete example of
the development of industries in the private sector leading towards new and modern
technology and creation of employment.
This example and many others prove that steps are being taken all rounds to create
employment opportunities and reduce poverty. There are many in stance which can prove
that the call for UN action against Myanmar is unjustified.

In 1996 Government of the Union of Myanmar enacted
the Private Industrial Enterprise Law (Law No.22/29 dated 26-10-1990) with the result that a large number of small scale industries had emerged to get themselves registered under that law with the Directorate of Industrial Supervision and Inspection of the Ministry of Industry (1).
